Oh My Love. Winter 2014 sure was the season of ah-maah-zing palettes was it not? The Christmas period cost me a pretty penny or two and no I'm not talking about all the gift buying either. When a palette comes out and you know it's not going to be around long, your left with a management decision that requires quick thinking. Do I, Don't I? Well I sure did, I wasn't going to be missing out on certain thoughtfully composed blush or eyeshadows grouped together to create palettes of pure perfection.

Nars released an amazing palette back in 2013 that I unfortunately missed out on and I was gutted so I was over the moon to manage to order this and also received a small discount at the time! Woo!

One of the things that put me off many Nars palettes is the repeated shades included. I love a palette and I'd much rather buy a palette than a single blush or eyeshadow but when every palette has a repeat or in many cases with Nars more than one, it gets boring. Orgasm blush is a much loved blush among many but not myself. I own it and I'm not impressed with it, I have many others that I'd much rather use but due to it's popularity it's constantly included along with Laguna. Again hugely popular but how many Laguna's do we need to own should we choose to purchase a Nars palette?

Yes small rant over, so as you can imagine once I seen the shades included in this and the fact it didn't include the big O I went for it. Sure it had Laguna again but I could live with that for the sake of the other shades that I hadn't tried before plus the two limited editions.

Lets go through the shades.

Miss Liberty. I love this shade name, reminds me of a cheer stunt. A beautiful highlight shade! When looked at in the pan it almost comes across as a cross between a champagne and a pearl but when on the skin it's like a pearly peach effect. Really great for brightening up the complexion and it's subtle which means no large shimmer particles or appearing too obvious either.

Sex Fantasy. One of the two shades that can give colour in the cheeks before even applied. What a name! If somebody were to ask what shade I was wearing I don't think I could repeat this and instead pretend I wasn't sure "Oh it's one by Nars.. not sure which one though!" It's one of two matte shades included which gives a nice variation. Sometimes we just need a nice matte shade and to diss the shimmer every so often for a fresh look. A light pink with cool undertones its perfect for fairer skin tones such as my own.

Deep Throat. Ahem the second rather rudely named blush in the palette. A hugely popular shade alongside Orgasm, this is included in a number of palettes also and is one that I already owned. Not my favourite as I find it too similar to Orgasm, being only slightly pinker and with less shimmer. I find Deep Throat's shade once applied to be true to pan, nicely pigmented and has a very subtle golden sheen under the light.

Final Cut. A shade I hadn't come across before. The second matte shade which again is very welcome in the palette and along with Sex Fantasy it's a limited edition. It's impressively pigmented and described as a peachy-coral which is exactly how it appears. I think this is going to be more of a Spring/Summer shade than a Winter one though so I look forward to using this much more in the coming months.

Laguna. Loved by many and described as a perfect contour shade despite the golden shimmer. I did used to use this daily as a light dusting under the cheekbones but moved onto other shades with matte finishes which I found I preferred. I don't reach for this very often anymore however I'm glad it was included and such a large amount as it's always useful to have around and makes for a useful palette to travel with.

I'm happy in general with most of the shades included however I'd have liked to see something other than the usuals, this could just be my opinion though. I would love to see Nars palettes with shades that aren't mostly owned by many Nars fans already. They are fantastic value for money and if you don't own any other Nars blushes would be a perfect introduction that would enable you to try multiple shades for a fraction of the prices they would cost individually.

Whilst Virtual Domination is no longer available in the UK from Authorised retailers it is still available at Sephora for those lucky enough to live in the US, however cannot be shipped to the UK.

Did you pick up the Virtual Domination palette last year? What do you think about Nars repeating shades in palettes?

For reference, shades above are - Laura Mercier Rose Ivory, YSL BR20, Rimmel Light Porcelain and Nars Deauville

Being a huge fan of foundations and a beauty collector it's only right that'd I'd own a few different brands, finishes and formulas which give different results and coverage. Ranging from drugstore to high end I've got a small collection which means I have choice and a good knowledge of what works for me.

So what is a perfect foundation? In my opinion there isn't a single perfect foundation, I have favourites don't get me wrong but I don't have an ultimate one that I'd give up all the rest for or give up the search for the next best thing so it means I, along with many others, am on a continuous search for what works in that moment.

Different seasons can change the finish and coverage that we're looking for from a great foundation, I'll be telling all on my choices for each season, today being winter, and the reasons I've chosen them for that particular weather period.

Laura Mercier Silk Crème Foundation £34.00 is a well known and rather expensive foundation but for good reason, it's a favourite among many, myself included. It gives medium-full coverage and I'd say a glowing skin finish which is perfect for winter when our skin can be drier and exposed to harsher weather. I've recommended this to so many people and most have gone and bought it to fall in love with it too. It's pricey but worth every penny, it's been my longest lasting foundation to date and its because so little is needed, it goes so far and is easy to build and layer should you choose to. The shades are darker than I expected, I ordered the shade Rose Ivory which is the third lightest with cool undertones and you can see above its not the best match, next time I'll try the lightest shade available but I'd repurchase this within seconds of running out!

Nars Sheer Glow Foundation £31.00 is another well known and again expensive foundation. It's a dewy finish and another medium-full coverage that gives tired winter skin a lovely, fresh looking boost and glow. It's a natural dewy finish, not a shiny one. It stays in place most of the day and just leaves skin looking flawless and radiant. It wears away evenly and not in patches. My problem with this foundation is the readily availability of it. I struggled to get hold of the shade I needed when I was first looking to purchase this which was really frustrating so if this were my only foundation and I found myself running low it may be awhile before I could repurchase and thats not really convenient in a woman's busy daily schedule. I do really enjoy wearing this though as it feels light on the skin and melts into it rather than sits on top so I'd repurchase it if I was able to find it at the time.

Rimmel Stay Matt Liquid Mousse Foundation £5.99. This foundation had me in two minds as to whether to write about it. I first tried this foundation in a sample and loved it, I'm not a fan of matt finish so didn't think I'd take to it but was pleasantly surprised and went and purchased it. The sample shade was Ivory which I found ever so slightly too dark but wearable so I decided to purchase the lighter colour Light Porcelain. Now here is the confusion. Ivory was wearable, smooth and lovely but Light Porcelain was awful. It patched, clung to dry patches and sat on top of skin obviously showing I was wearing foundation. This shade just didn't work for me despite it being more suited. I was really disappointed but honestly it's not the first time this has happened with a paler foundation. Despite this I liked the Ivory shade so much that I decided to borrow my Mums after finding she too owned this to make sure that it wasn't just a good sample and yes, the Ivory shade was still as good as the first time I tried it, ever so slightly too dark but it's something that can be blended to look right and in my opinion it's worth the extra effort as it's one of the only drugstore foundations that I can happily wear and compare with the high end foundations I so love.

My all season wonder YSL Le Teint Touche Éclat £30.50 is one of my foundations that I can find myself reaching for all year round. It's glowy enough for dull skin in winter, it's dewy enough for spring, sheer enough for summer and subtle enough for autumn. It can be paired with powders or worn alone for a natural look. It's minimal coverage whilst being long wearing and no matter the condition the skins in it looks amazing, I find it's not buildable in that the coverage isn't hugely effected the more thats applied but yet almost reflects off the face in a positive way that blends imperfections and minor flaws.

Top winter skin tips for flawless looking foundation

I'm sure we've heard many of these before but to really achieve the most from our base products there are certain things we can do to help foundation look its best.

☆ Moisturise. Moisturise. Moisturise
☆ Exfoliate regularly to leave skin smooth and flake free for a flawless application
☆ Treat skin to face masks and treatments even if done at home with homemade products
☆ Drink loads of water
☆ Wear a primer, to help achieve a softer and smoother foundation application
☆ Don't apply too much foundation so it looks caked on and opt for less is more
☆ Remove all traces of makeup before bed
☆ Give skin a break, have make up free days and let your face breath
Don't forget the all important Smile! Everyone looks beautiful when they smile!

What are your favourite winter foundations? Do you agree with any of the above?

Tianne | Queen of the Fairies

Tianne - TEE-ann - one who is Queen of the fairies

I know the garden has fairies, it's so big and beautiful that they must live in there somewhere. Sprinkling their magic over the flowers every season and simply doing a gorgeous job. I want Tianne to carry on the love for fairies and believe for as long as possible. Playing with Photoshop can bring some children's charming beliefs to life and I've had such fun putting together some special 'memories' that she'll be able to look back on to keep the magic in her heart.

All these images are identical but with different effects. I couldn't decide which I preferred and there are so many different ways to make photo's look magical that I decided to have a few effects to keep forever.

I learn effects using Photoshop by trial and error and love to pick out photos that I think will make a nice project. I've still got a long way to go to edit photo's properly but for our own viewing and having some fun I think I'm certainly improving.
